Radio Telephone Licence (R/T)

Although all through my training I was using the radio to talk to all and sundry, including ATC at Shoreham, I still had to pass the CAA's R/T exam, which comprises a 30 question written paper, plus an oral exam using a flight plan and simulator box.

Keith of Southern Light Flyers, suggested I take the exam with a CFI local to Shoreham. He charges 40 quid for the exam, plus 25 quid per hour for the simulator machine. Another alternative would be Biggin Groundschool, who have a one-day intensive course, with exams, for a fixed fee of 125 quid.

Luckily for me, a chap at my flying club, Chris Jarvis, was about to hold a series of R/T lectures for club members. His fee? just 10 quid - and he didn't even keep that, he kindly donated it all to club funds! So five weeks later and I'm feeling reasonably confident of passing the exams. Time to book up with the CFI at Thruxton, who charges 40 quid for the exam set.
