My favourite 'plane back then was a horrid
Thunder Tiger
high-wing 'trainer' - although it could hardly be called a trainer since it was supposed to be fitted with
a .25 cubic inch engine, and I only had a
GP40, a.40 cubic
inch engine available. Needless to say it out-performed a load of other models including quite a few
ducted-fan types!
I finally stacked it Big Time (tm) when I had radio failure during a 45 degree full-power dive, and as it build up speed towards the ground, there was a white trail of smoke being left behind it - just as if it had been shot down!. It made a most impressive balsa wood fountain the other side of the field I was using, and Nikki was most amused by this. I was not. Luckily all the radio equipment survived, as did the .40 cubic inch engine. These went on to serve for quite a few years in my Morley Hughes 300 Helicopter model which I still have. One of the problems with a Helicopter is that the slightest mistake tends to destroy the main rotor blades as well as the tail rotor blades. Early on in my flying attempts with the Heli,I was getting through a couple of sets of blades each weekend, at £40 a go. Ouch. |
