The first PFLs
The sudden lack of power persuaded me we did. I rightly assumed this was a PFL (Practise Forced Landing). "That's ok", I thought. I'm pretty good at doing these so it shouldn't have been a problem. I normally practise PFLs down to about 600 feet to avoid problems with the 500ft rule. (Mustn't fly within 500 feet of any person, vessel or building - or else you win a rather large fine as a booby prize, if caught out by a nasty you didn't see; like somebody under a tree.) We were down to 300 feet and Mr Examiner hadn't said anything so I though that was enough and climbed away. It wasn't (enough, that is). He wanted be to go right down to crop height. We did another one, and the lack of any wind at all left me well high. We would have touched down with about 30 metres to go until the far hedge was upon us. Bugger, or similar. |
