What is a Microlight?

What do you think it is? It's an aeroplane of course!

Microlights come in two styles:

  • Flexwing, a.k.a. Weightshift
  • 3-Axis
The main thing to remember about Microlights, is that they are not weak or unsafe. All Microlights must conform to BCAR Section S and as a result are often stronger than your average Cessna aeroplane!

The limitation for Microlights is the total weight allowed, which until earlier this year was 390kg but has now increased to 450kg. This is the Maximum All Up Weight including fuel and people. For example; the CFM Shadow is limited by weight to 5 gallons of fuel, with two 86kg people on board.

So, a Microlight is a very light, strong and capable machine.
