NIKKI'S DWARF HAMMIES

I have 2 chinese dwarf hamsters named Holly and Ivy, I got them from Steve as a christmas present (hence their names) in 1997.

They are housed in separate cages (dwarfs can be housed together but these two fight - Steve says trust me to pick out dwarfs that can't get on with one another).

The cages are three-tiered and have a house, 2 food trays, a water bottle, a wheel, a chew triangle, a clambering toy, a boot and another toy in each cage.

They also have an exercise ball each and have a large plastic box filled with sawdust with 2 large two storey houses to clamber about in while I clean them out once a week.

In other words they're spoilt rotten.

Holly - The Kami Hami

Holly (A.K.A. "Kami Hami") is the more adventurous of the two and there's not much that phases her. She'll try clambering on just about anything.

She's very cheeky - if you get in her way she'll just try to nudge you out the way and will try to go down your top at every available opportunity.

She loves chockie, biscuit treats, sunflower seeds and her exercise ball.

Steve has taught her a trick where he opens the cage door and she climbs up and out onto his hand (but only when he's got sunflower seeds in his hand - funny that!!!).

My Little Pooky - Ivy

Ivy (A.K.A. "Pookie") is quite timid, gentle and very much a little lady (unlike tomboy Holly), although she can be "Hollyesk" now and then.

Ivy will sit in your hand or on your shoulder nuzzled into your neck and will spend her time clambering up and down your arm between the two.

She hasn't really got a favourite treat, but boy does she adore her wheel and exercise ball - so much so that at one time she took to nesting beside her wheel.

Unfortunately Ivy hasn't got the hang of Holly's trick - she's done it a couple of times, but is too timid to do it everytime like Holly.

SAD FOOT NOTE :-(

Holly had to be put down on 7th Nov '99. She had a massive stomach tumor. Tumors are apparently the cause of 1 in 3 deaths of hammies. She was OK on the Friday, but on the Sunday night I checked her out & she had puffed up & didn't look at all well, so we took her down the vet & he diagnosed a tumor & we had her put to sleep. It was all very sad but for the best, the vet said that she hadn't had the tumor long, so she hopefully didn't suffer too much. She was a cute little thing with a very cheeky & inquisitive nature.

Unfortunately on Monday 23rd November, following a trip to the vet for a tooth clip, Ivy fell ill & died during the night. She was a very gentle & timid little thing. We will miss them both, but at least they're together again now. < sniff >
