I have been working on the Front Desk (A.K.A. "Housten" - as in Housten, we have a problem"), since 1994, but have worked in the Estates Department for the last 12 years.
The Estates Department deals with everything to do with maintenance of the buildings and equipment within the Hospitals (i.e. everything from pruning the roses up to building new wards).
We cover a 800sqm area, which includes approx 8 hospitals 62 clinics.
We have approx 11 Managers, 1 Supervisor and 25 tradesmen within the Department.
The Front Desk system, is for the hospital staff to log their job requests (i.e. replace light bulb, repair door handle etc.)
I answer the phone, log the job request onto the computer & then issue a job card to the tradesmen.
When the tradesman has booked the time and date he started/finished the job, I then enter that info into the computer.
I deal with people chasing jobs and I call in specialist firms when required.
On average I log between 30 - 50 calls a day, although the record has been 80 calls in one day.
I also log, issue and process the planned maintenance side of the system (i.e. testing fire alarms, cleaning filters etc.)
And that basically is what I do,or at least what they think I do :-), from 8.00am-5.00pm everyday Mon-Fri.
I work for Surrey Hampshire Borders NHS Trust in the Estates Dept at Milford Hospital, Godalming, Surrey, England.
